Ford is using Wi-Fi at one assembly plant to add software to its new Edge and Lincoln MKX crossovers, but it may be just the start of the customization possibilities at car factories and dealerships.

  • Ford today announced that it is working with developers to bring smartphone applications to the dashboards of its cars via its SYNC technology. It is making a software development kit (SDK) and application programming interfaces (APIs) available to developers so they can modify existing apps to work hands-free using voice recognition through Ford SYNC. Ford believes this will lead to safer driving. Ford is initially targeting applications such as news, weather, entertainment, location-based services, financial and scheduling services.
