Sony announces Bloggie Touch MHS-TS20K pocket camcorder

On paper, it's extremely impressive that Sony crammed 3D capability into a pocket camcorder - and not the old-fashioned blue-red (anaglyph) technology either. The Bloggie 3D shoots real stereoscopic 3D. But cut through the wow factor, and how does the Bloggie shape up as a pocket camcorder?

The Sony bloggie HD MHS-CM5 is a new pistol-grip style pocket HD camcorder with a 2.5-inch swivel LCD monitor and a 1/2.5 inch CMOS sensor that Sony hopes will penetrate the market more successfully than its predecessor, the very similar Webbie. Sony officially unveiled two new additions to its Bloggie family of pocket camcorders today: the Bloggie Sport, a ruggedized pocket camcorder, and the Bloggie Live, which has built-in Wi-Fi, letting users shoot live streaming video.

Sony is developing a new type of AVCHD high definition camcorder which features key technologies cameras NEX-5 and NEX-3. The camcorder will also be equipped with the same "Exmor" APS HD CMOS sensor that will be used in these cameras. In addition, the new camcorder will be compatible with the "E Mount" interchangeable lenses developed for the new NEX-Series and also with the existing Alpha camera lens lineup via the special "A Mount" adapter.

The new Sony Bloggie Touch features a 3.0-inch touch-enabled display, and a form factor that looks more like a cell phone than a camcorder. In the face of competition from Kodak, Panasonic, Cisco and Samsung, does this sleek Sony have the stuff to stack up?

Samsung has announced the W200 rugged pocket camcorder, capable of recording full 1080p30 HD videos. Built around a 5MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor, a 2.3" LCD and a F2.2 lens with anti-fog coating, the camcorder is shockproof to 2m/6.5 ft and waterproof to 3m/10 ft. It will be available from May 2011 at a suggested retail price of $159.
