Intel and Orange finalise deal to push Meego OS

Intel today indicated that it will no longer develop and advance its mobile Linux platform called MeeGo. MeeGo was a merged project between Intel and Nokia, which combined their Moblin and Maemo mobile Linux systems. The first (and apparently only) MeeGo device to reach the market is the Nokia N9, which went on sale this week. Nokia has since ditched all efforts to develop MeeGo and Symbian, and is focusing on Windows Phone 7 instead. Intel is backing a new mobile Linux platform with the support of Samsung, called Tizen.

Intel and Orange, one of the world's leading telecommunications operators, announced a strategic agreement to deliver Orange multimedia services across a number of devices based on the Intel® Atom™ processor and MeeGo software platform. MeeGo - a result of a merger of the Linux-based Moblin™ and Maemo software projects – enables an open software environment for rapid development of a range of smart, PC-like devices and exciting new services.

Back at Mobile World Congress Nokia and Intel announced their joint venture to combine both the Nokia Maemo and Intel Moblin UI, and now the first samples of Meego 1.0 have surface on the net and we have one such sample of Meego 1.0 in action for you today courtesy of recombu.

Apparently the largest mobile phone maker in the World, Nokia and chip maker Intel are merging their software platforms Moblin and Maemo to produce a unified platform which will be known as Meego reports an article over on daily mobile.
Meego will apparently run on multiple hardware platforms across numerous devices including mediaphones, netbooks, tablets, in vehicle infotainment systems, TVs and pocketable mobile computers, (we presume this means smartphones such as the Nokia N900.)

NewsFactor - When the dust settled from Nokia's announcement last week that it will transition its smartphones to Microsoft's Windows Phone 7, Intel was left holding the next-generation MeeGo operating system it had been developing with the handset maker. In a panel discussion Wednesday at the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Intel CEO Paul Otellini said his company will continue to back MeeGo.

Only the other day Nokia and Intel announced their joint venture to merge the Moblin and Maemo operating system to form a new operating system known as Meego, and now we learn which mobile phone will be the first handset to sport Meego; the LG GW990, reports an article over on electronista.
The LG GW990 is a Morrestown powered smartphone which LG expect t release in Korea in the second half of this year and should then follow in other countries as well, and will be the first phone based on Intel’s Morrestown processor.
