Samsung Galaxy Player 3.6 released in South Korea, the rest of the world to follow soon
While some time ago it seemed that media players were almost dead and buried and had no way to compete with smartphones and tablets, a couple of recent releases show us that things might not be that dramatic for these gadgets after all.
After the Sony Walkman Z unveiling at CES last week, another media player has been launched today, the Samsung Galaxy Player 3.6. Having all the features a normal smartphone would, except for the ability of making phone calls, the Galaxy Player looks pretty nice on paper.
Released in South Korea for the moment, but expected to hit the US and European market soon, the digital media player is powered by a 1 GHz Hummingbird processor and sports a decent 3.6-inch display with 480 x 800 pixels resolution.
Other features include a 3 MPx rear-facing camera, a VGA front-facing webcam, as well as Android Market access for downloading apps. The OS of choice is Android 2.3 Gingerbread, so all in all the Galaxy Player 3.6 is just like a smartphone, albeit a pretty basic one, without the actual phone function.
In terms of internal storage, the Galaxy Player 3.6 comes in two different versions, with either 8 or 16 GB of on-board memory, while as far as pricing goes, things are pretty reasonable in South Korea and should be even more reasonable when and if the gadget will hit the US.
The 8 GB model goes for the equivalent of around 174 dollars right now, while the 16 GB version of the digital media player is available for 209 bucks, which makes me suspect a US starting price of around $140-150.
If you ask me, the Samsung Galaxy Player 3.6 might be an interesting competitor for the recently released Sony Walkman Z1000, coming with a better price tag, but with clearly inferior tech specs. What about you, would you be tempted to pick up this media player for, say, 150 bucks?
