Panasonic, Nikon Ship New GPS-Enabled Cameras

This week Panasonic and Nikon have both announced new digital cameras featuring built-in GPS capabilities.

Panasonic has announced the LUMIX ZS20 ($350), a slim Digital Camera with a 20x optical zoom lens.

LightSquared Caught Up in Bribery Scandal

Senator Chuck Grassley has accused LightSquared of bribery, claiming that the company insinuated that it would build a call center in Iowa if he "pulled his punches" in the government's investigation of LightSquared's GPS interference issue. LightSquared vehemently denied the accusation, saying that Grassley has misstated the facts to create the appearance of impropriety. Grassley has been a vocal critic of LightSquared's planned Long Term Evolution 4G network. LightSquares is awaiting FCC approval to begin building its network.

Nikon replaces high-end Coolpix 'P' series with P510 and P310

nikon_cp310.png Nikon has updated its photographer-friendly P series with the Coolpix P510 and P310. The P510 gains GPS and an extended zoom, now reaching from 24-1000mm equivalent. This 42x range is likely to be quite a challenge for its VR image stabilization system, so we'll be interested to see how it performs. The P310 is a more subtle upgrade of the P300.

nikon_cps6300.png Nikon has refreshed its line of S series style compact cameras, which ranges from $140 6x zoom models through to bells-and-whistles-including 18x compact superzoom. The range is topped by the S9300 which offers that 18x, 25mm-450mm equiv. stabilized lens, 16MP back-lit CMOS sensor, 1080p30 with stereo sound recording and built-in GPS. The S6300 is a slim, 10x 25-250mm equiv camera built around the same sensor.

Sprint Will Bail on LightSquared If No FCC Nod by March

Sprint has extended the deadline it gave to LightSquared to win FCC approval by six more weeks. Sprint struck a deal with LightSquared in October that would have the two companies share wireless spectrum, network construction, and equipment costs. At the time, Sprint gave LightSquared until the end of the year to gain government approval for its planned Long Term Evolution 4G network. At the end of December, when the FCC hadn't made a decision, Sprint gave LightSquared a 30-day reprieve.
