Fix for Zune 4.2 Software in Windows 7 RC

Posted on 28 January 2010

Anyone who owns a Zune, which I realize is not too many, probably found out late Monday that the Zune marketplace had been temporarily shut down due to some maintenance. The work that Microsoft was doing with the Zune software mostly had to do with the updates later this spring that will allow Zune HD users to use the Xvid/MPEG-4 part 2 in the Zune software and on the Zune HD device. Which essentially means no more having to convert video files for the Zune, just drag, drop and watch.Courtesy of Zuneboards.comI decided to update my own software on two different computers late last night and all went perfectly well on the first. The second computer, however, game me fits. I downloaded the software without issue, but when I went to update the software I would get an error message saying that the software could not update and that I would need to update my Windows update version to continue with installation. Microsoft included a link to their support site which would explain how to do this. The problem was that everything had been updated and when I would open Windows Update, the only update that was available was the Zune 4.2 software update. I found it weird that the software I was trying to update required me to have the software update or something of that sort. I was stuck in an update loop. After cursing at my machine and Microsoft for about a half an hour I decided to start doing some research. What I found was that the update is not technically compatible with Windows 7 RC and my second computer is still waiting for me to upgrade it to the purchased retail version, so I was stuck. Luckily, the guys in the Zune forums found a workaround to this issue for those still using the RC version of Windows 7.Here’s what they did:User jackcrack7 wrote, ”I didn’t have any luck with phone support but I did find a way to make it work on another message board. Download the full package from this website: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9d25c2a6-cae3-49b0-a474-124fe79628a8&displaylang=enOnce it’s downloaded, right-click on it and go to properties. Go to Compatibility and run it in Compatibility Mode for Windows Vista. I don’t know why this works but it did.”I realize that the Zune following is not a huge crowd, but I figured I’d post my findings so anyone banging their head against their machine, like I did, wouldn’t have to do too much digging for an answer.FYI: I have also read that some “Zune Phone” code has been spotted in the new update software. I wouldn’t put too much hope in anything just yet, but there may be a Microsoft phone competitor very soon if this is correct.Sources: Zuneboards.com, Zune ForumsRelated posts:

If you purchase a new ‘Mango’ Windows Phone or update your current phone to the 7.5 software, you’ll need to use the new Zune 4.8 PC software along with your device. I’ve been using the 4.8 software for a few months now along with the beta version of Mango and there are no noticeable differences that I can see.

  • The number of Mac users who will use the new Windows Phone 7 is probably a small number. The number of users who will like the platform, but won’t admit it, is probably even greater. However, the need for a piece of software which will allow Apple users to connect their WP7 to their Macintosh is still necessary, but Microsoft has been silent if not almost elusive on the subject of Mac compatibility.
Then yesterday, a Microsoft employee tweeted that there would be software for the Mac to allow syncing to the phone:

WPCentral has revisited those steps which appear to work with the Mango update as well. A number of users have already tried this age-old method and have found that it does work if done correctly and as far as I’m aware, this method does not cross any agreements or void any warranties. That being said, try these steps at your own risk:
