Record Breaking Patch Tuesday On The Way

Posted on 06 August 2010

Microsoft recently released an urgent system patch for a security flaw that was beginning to rapidly spread, what was unusual was the fact that Microsoft released it before patch Tuesday. Even so, Microsoft has issued another 14 security bulletins on Tuesday to plug 34 holes, including eight that are critical, in Windows, Office, Internet Explorer, SQL and Silverlight. A new record for Microsoft. 8 out of these 14 updates are ranked as “critical” and the other 6 are marked as “important”
This will be the most bulletins we have ever released in a month; we have released 13 bulletins on a couple of occasions
These patches are for Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, IE6,7 and 8. As well as numerous versions of Office for both Mac and PC along with Silverlight 2 and 3.
The IE, Office, and Silverlight updates fix an increasingly used type of flaw “where attackers and malware go through the installed applications rather than through the core operating system,” said Qualys CTO Wolfgang Kandek
Out of all the updates, only 2 of the critical ones are destined for Windows 7, but when you factor in IE and silverlight, 10 of the 14 updates will find there way onto your machine.
Users who are still hanging onto Windows XP SP2 will no longer receive any of these new updates since Microsoft axed support for that version of the OS a couple of weeks ago. They are urging all users to upgrade to Windows XP SP3 or Windows 7 as soon as possible to continue getting updates.
