Will “The Hit” that is Windows 7 Translate to WinMo 7?
Most everyone has probably heard the saying that “history always repeats itself” and I’m sure that Microsoft hopes the old adage is true, because their next Windows Mobile operating system is reportedly being called “seven’, sound familiar? With the “homeruns” that are Windows 7 and the updated Zune software, it sounds as if Microsoft is ready to cash in on another lucky number seven. Last week, we received notice that Microsoft’s new Mobile OS would be delayed until 2011. Since then, several reports have Microsoft possibly making a new Mobile OS announcement in the Mobile World Congress conference being held next month in Barcelona. Perhaps we could be seeing the long-rumored Zune phone that many, including myself, have been clamoring for months.
Not the actual Zune PhoneAllThingsD blog, Egbert has announced that the Zune phone will be based…on the media platform of Microsoft’s Zune media player with claims of a five mega-pixel camera, Office features, Xbox live support along with 720p HD video support. As I’ve stated before, the only way we’ll see a successful Zune phone is if Microsoft dedicates itself to growing the small app store that is Zune Marketplace. It will need to compete with the likes of the Apple appstore, Blackberry apps and Android apps, so Microsoft has its work cut out for them. The question is, can Microsoft use the momentum that it has gained with Windows 7 and create a similar experience in the mobile world? Like Windows 7, WinMo 7 must shake the perception that it is too complicated, too bloated and not user friendly. Also, like Windows 7, WinMo 7 is said to be Microsoft’s last chance at redemption. Vista was so hated and reviled by the majority or at least the vocal majority, that it started to make people think about their other options, that is until Microsoft delivered on its promise to bring a quicker, smaller and more-user friendly OS to market. One similar point to note regarding the new Windows Mobile platform. Many sources are reporting that, like Windows 7, there will be multiple versions: a business version and a media version. With the new reported name change from Windows Mobile to “seven” it sounds like Microsoft may be trying to align its mobile platform with the success of the computer OS. Whether or not any of the rumors are true, yet to be seen, but if Microsoft can deliver a mobile OS similar to what it did on the computer field, we might be seeing an all-out war in the smartphone arena. It’s been expected for some time and following the integration of Zune services into Windows Phone, Microsoft has finally pulled the plug on its Zune hardware media players.
According to the Zune Insider podcast via Paul Thurrott’s Windows Phone Secrets blog, Microsoft is working or planning to port some of the Zune HD apps over to the Windows Phone platform.
